Twice a year, we adjust our clocks. In the spring, we “lose” an hour of sleep — but we gain longer days, warmer weather, and a fresh start.

While you’re changing the batteries in your smoke detectors and resetting your clocks, it’s also the perfect reminder to review something just as important: your insurance coverage.

As an independent insurance agent, I like to call this your “Spring Forward Insurance Checkup.” Here’s why it matters — and what you should review.

???? Why Spring Is the Perfect Time for an Insurance Review

Spring brings change:

  • Home improvement projects
  • Travel plans
  • Severe weather season
  • New drivers
  • Real estate purchases
  • Boats, motorcycles, and RVs coming out of storage

Life doesn’t stay the same — and your insurance shouldn’t either.

A 15-minute review now can prevent major coverage gaps later.

Update Your Home’s Value

Have you:

  • Renovated a kitchen or bathroom?
  • Finished a basement?
  • Added a deck or patio?
  • Installed a pool?

Upgrades increase your home’s replacement cost. If your coverage hasn’t been updated, you could be underinsured.

Inspect Winter Damage

Winter can leave behind hidden issues:

  • Roof damage
  • Gutter separation
  • Foundation cracks
  • Siding damage

Addressing these early helps prevent denied claims later due to maintenance neglect.

Review Water Coverage

Spring thaw and heavy rain can lead to:

  • Basement seepage
  • Sump pump failure
  • Sewer backup

Standard homeowners policies typically do not automatically include water backup coverage. If you don’t have it, now is the time to add it.

???? 2. Auto Insurance: New Season, New Risks

Teen Drivers & Schedule Changes

Spring often means:

  • New drivers getting licensed
  • Teens driving to sports, jobs, or activities

Make sure all drivers are properly listed on your policy.

Road Trip Season

Planning spring or summer travel?

Review:

  • Liability limits
  • Rental car coverage
  • Roadside assistance

State minimum limits are often not enough to fully protect your assets.

Recreational Vehicles

Bringing out:

  • Motorcycles
  • Boats
  • RVs
  • ATVs

Make sure they’re insured before hitting the road or water. Seasonal vehicles are often overlooked.

???? 3. Prepare for Spring Storm Season

Spring brings severe weather in many areas:

  • Windstorms
  • Hail
  • Tornadoes
  • Heavy rain

Now is a good time to:

  • Confirm your deductible
  • Understand wind/hail deductibles (if applicable)
  • Review roof age and condition
  • Trim trees near your home

Knowing your deductible before a claim happens eliminates surprises.

???? 4. Life Changes = Coverage Changes

Spring is a common time for major life events:

  • Buying a home
  • Getting married
  • Having a baby
  • Starting a business

Each milestone should trigger an insurance review.

For example:

  • A growing family may need more life insurance.
  • A home purchase requires updated dwelling coverage.
  • A new business may require commercial liability protection.

???? 5. Consider an Umbrella Policy

As assets grow, liability exposure grows too.

An umbrella policy adds extra liability protection over:

  • Home insurance
  • Auto insurance
  • Boat or rental property policies

It’s often more affordable than people expect — and can provide significant financial protection.

???? Don’t Forget the Basics

Daylight Saving Time reminders often include:

  • Change smoke detector batteries
  • Test carbon monoxide detectors
  • Replace HVAC filters

Add one more to your list:

✔ Schedule an insurance review

Why Work With an Independent Insurance Agent?

As an independent agent, I’m not tied to just one company. That means I can:

  • Compare multiple carriers
  • Shop rates for you
  • Customize coverage
  • Identify gaps you might not see

Spring is about fresh starts. It’s a great time to make sure your coverage still fits your life.

Spring Forward With Confidence

Losing an hour of sleep isn’t ideal — but gaining peace of mind is.

If it’s been more than a year since your last policy review, now is the perfect time to check in.
